Apple II, Apple IIe & Apple IIgs emulation features

Support both 8- and 16-bit Apple IIs. Be cross-platform. Offer a simple, intuitive user interface — packaged 100% ready to go. Those goals are what make GSSquared unique among Apple II emulators.

The differentiators

  • 8-bit and 16-bit Apple IIs

GSSquared models (most of) the classic 8-bit Apple II and Apple IIe line and the 16-bit Apple IIgs. To our knowledge, it is the only emulator besides MAME that covers both.

  • Cross-platform

Written in C++ with SDL3 for graphics, sound, and I/O — a foundation that makes building across macOS, Windows, and Linux practical, not an afterthought.

  • Intuitive UI, 100% ready to run

Download, launch, pick a system, load a disk. No extra downloads required on day one.

Top features

What GSSquared brings to the table

  1. Play the whole Apple II family

Apple II, Apple II+, Apple IIe, Apple IIe Enhanced, Apple IIe Enhanced with 65816, and Apple IIgs — one app for the series, not just 8-bit or just GS.

  2. Choose your retro experience

A tile-based System Select screen: pick a machine and go. Create custom setups when you want more control — without expert configuration on day one.

  3. Packaged ready to run

macOS app bundle, Windows ZIP (no installer), and Linux AppImage — download and launch.

  4. Looks like you remember it

Three display engines: authentic NTSC composite, exact Apple IIgs RGB, and classic monochrome (green, amber, or white). Text, lo-res, hi-res, double modes, and IIgs Super Hi-Res.

  5. Optional CRT presentation

GPU-based CRT effects for that period-monitor feel, plus full-screen and high-DPI polish on modern displays.

  6. Drop in your disks

Drag-and-drop disk images onto the window. Broad format support including .dsk, .po, .woz, .2mg, and hard-drive images.

  7. Copy-protected classics welcome

Woz-format floppy support is central — so protected titles can run without fighting image formats.

  8. Serious storage for libraries

Disk II, SmartPort / ProDOS block devices, and IIgs IWM 5.25″ and 3.5″ drives. Mount multi-volume hard-drive collections when you want a whole library at once.

  9. Host FST — your real folders in GS/OS

On the Apple IIgs, Host FST mounts a folder from your Mac, Windows, or Linux machine as a GS/OS volume (:Host). Copy files in and out without packing them into a disk image first.

  10. Input that fits how you play

Modern keyboard mapping, USB/Bluetooth gamepads, mouse-as-joystick, and Apple mouse support. On the IIgs desktop, GS/OS mouse tracking keeps the pointer natural — often without capture mode.

  11. Run authentic — or floor it

Emulated CPU speeds of 1.0 MHz, 2.8 MHz, 7.1 MHz, and 14.3 MHz, plus Ludicrous Speed when you want the host machine to go as fast as it can.

  12. Build and keep your dream machine

Custom .gs2 profiles with slots, cards, and pre-mounted disks. Mockingboard music (including dual cards), IIgs Ensoniq sound, paste text / copy screen — and a debugger when you need it.
